Ultra Woodworking Project Lab is an independent collection of practical calculators for people who want to check quantities, spacing and geometry before cutting.

What the site helps with

The calculators answer common workshop questions: how many sheets cover a surface, how much timber or running length to buy, which equal mitre angle a frame needs, how rectangular parts might fit on sheet material, and where to mark equal shelves or inset drawer fronts. Each page includes a worked example, the formula behind the result and a printable record.

Built for UK workshop use

Dimensions are entered in millimetres, running lengths are shown in metres and optional prices use pounds. The wording follows UK workshop usage, including timber, mitre, cutting list, cornice, saw kerf and sheet material. American spellings or terms may appear only where they are part of a source title or help a reader recognise the same tool.

How calculations are checked

Every formula is published on the sources and formulas page. The example on each calculator is checked independently, and invalid entries are tested to make sure an old result is removed rather than left on screen. Formula pages and guides were reviewed on 4 September 2026. The methodology explains the checks and rounding rules in more detail.

Why the tools have clear limits

A narrow calculator is easier to understand and check. The plywood calculator estimates broad rectangular coverage; the mitre calculator handles equal flat angles; the cut list optimiser places rectangles. Problems that need structural data, three-dimensional joinery, manufacturer limits or professional judgement stay outside the result instead of being filled with a generic assumption.

Independent and non-commercial

The site is not a timber merchant, furniture maker, design practice, structural engineering service, training provider or compliance checker. It does not sell plans, collect enquiries, use affiliate links or change results for a supplier or advertiser. Product density, kerf, stock size, cost and allowances come from the values entered by the user.
